Knocked down, not up

I recently wrote an article encouraging people to find their inner Chicken Crimpy.  The piece was about taking a chill pill and stop over-commiting myself to a million things at once. So I did. For six days. Then we started our renovations.

When we were heavily pregnant we lived in renovation land. Our house had been gutted, meaning there were no walls at the back of the house. No bathroom, just a portaloo and portashower in the front yard. Our kitchen was a camping stove and a BBQ for three months and we drank water from the front garden tap. Our neighbours all knew that I peed at 4am every morning because they would see our front light go on as I tip toed to our portaloo where I would try to wee in a plastic bowl as quietly as possible in the dead of the night. I couldn’t even shut the portaloo door because my stomach was so achingly big.

Our builders during this time were so patient, especially when I started mat leave and was hanging around the house growing bigger by the minute. We formed a special bond. One that saw the builders put spare towels in the back of their utes, ‘just in case of an emergency trip to the hospital’.

This bond also meant that our three or so builders, who were strangers to us before our renovations began, got to know us so very quickly as they lived through our pregnancy. I can’t even tell you how many times our main builder would walk past our bedroom and see me lying on my side in undies and a tank snoozing with my mouth open, dribble pouring into the top end of my pregnancy pillow while the rest of the long sack was wedged between my legs.

I didn’t care after a few weeks. It was hot. 40 degrees hot and I was so hungry and pregnant. I would eye off their eskies, excited for smoko just to see what treats they had brought in. Once they saw me eat a WHOLE watermelon in one sitting with a soup spoon.

So here we are again. In renovation land. Finishing the last bits of our whole house renovation. Finally. Almost 20 months after our builder received a call from my husband asking if they could quickly put the toilet in as we had just had Alfie.

Here we are, living in renovation land, camping in the rear of our house like a Little House on the Prairie, except this time instead of being severely knocked up we have a toddler running around knocking everything over.

What’s harder? Renovating while pregnant or renovating with a toddler?

My husband and I are no less feral. Instead of passing out at 11am in my undies drooling on my side, I’m running around like a headless chook in the morning wearing just a bra and dacks trying to sort out lunches, breakfast, attempting not to fist fight my husband and always looking for a goddamn shoe. Trying to squeeze a shower in and attempt to be a loving, happy family before our builder arrives is a joke. We just let him see how real it is. He’s newly married, perhaps the Webb family visual is a perfect form of contraception for him.

Today is Friday and it is my ‘day off’ from work. Normally when my kid is snoozing, I take my pants off and have a nap on the couch.

I’m wondering if this is pushing the boundary a bit too far. I mean, what’s my excuse? I have plenty.  But instead I might smash a box of Chicken Crimpy’s. At this moment, it’s the best way to find one within.

Super quick deliveries

Well hello. It's been ages - almost a month - and boy has a lot happened!

Firstly, I need to explain why I have been so absent... we kinda had a baby. Nice and early. And he's perfect.

My birthday gets off to a sh!t start

Today is my 31st birthday.

It's not even 7am and I'm cranky. So I thought I would reflect on birthdays past to pump up my mood.
Last year my BFF pack rented a spectacular house in Billy Ocean Grove for my 30th and delivered a two-day tiki party. Fabulous.

In 2011 Reg and I celebrated in HoiAn, Vietnam smashing beers, swimming and eating noodles as part of our honeymoon. Amazing.
Happy honeymooners

MASSIVE DAY - a kitchen for our little house

What an excellent day. A really excellent day.

Last night we came home to find our beautiful floorboards had been layed. Don't they look amazing and they're solid as a rock! I can't believe these babies were put in over three days, I thought it would take at least a week or more.

A stable floor for pregnant peanuts and big bubbas

Far out, things happen pretty quickly around here. Perhaps it's this pregnant haze that seems to consume most of my day that makes me forget about what's going on around me. I mean, just yesterday I spent 45 minutes in the local IGA. I was there to pick up some grub for tea, but I walked out after all that time with just a packet of unsalted peanuts and ate them on the way home. It wasn't until I got home that I realised I didn't have anything for dinner. Vague is but a mere statement.

Walls, floors and filling up my automobile wearing a swimsuit

I have just come from my weekly Monday night aqua aerobics class. I love this class and the ladies that I see every week. I'm not sure what we do more of - the exercises or gossiping? Whatever happens, I always come out of the class having giggled the whole way through. What gets me really going is the pool pony race we get to do at the end of the class where we all 'saddle up' on two pool noodles each and paddle from one end to the other. Brilliant.

Locked up and loaded - I put on my work boots

Yahoo - we have walls and aren't they a pretty sight making our pad nice and cosy. All I want to do now is slip on a Jim Croce record and settle in for a cup of Earl Grey.

RIP Mister Croce

Getting plastered with tradies

Wahoo, the plaster will go up tomorrow! This means our walls are nearly complete.

Gio and Todd have commenced putting up the weatherboards - just in time before the storm hit us last night - and today the boys ripped up our hallway floor. We can officially walk from the front to the back of our house without balancing on beams, holding onto joists, standing on a nail, getting a splinter, tripping over some edge of something etc. However, I'm still not allowed to do this without wearing shoes... boring.

School for babies

Two things:
1. Why don't they put a DVD of childbirth education classes in with a packet of condoms, then you are fully prepared for what is to come?
2. How rad is our feature tile?

Neenish tarts and happy hearts

We don't mind the word tart here at home. We use it regularly, fondly and loosely.

Hearing the word makes my pregnancy hormones zing, almost making me burst into tears through emotional giggles.

So during the week when Johnny Kettle mentioned my new two favourite words Neenish Tarts, I squealed, ran out to the building site and screamed WHERE?

Tapping into the timber and tile market

Nothing beats a Saturday morning than a stop by the local recycled timber yard.

We were shopping around for some cool looking timber to be used as our island bench top. Dougie suggested that timber on the island top and polished concrete for the main kitchen bench top would look rad. We agreed.

We headed down to see our pal Andy at Urban Salvage in Spotswood. This place is awesome and it seems every time we go there they have a new shipment of some kind of recycled timber that has come from an obscure place.

Nesting needs and week 3 in review

Perhaps it's because I've just hit the 3rd trimester and I'm on the home straight or maybe it's because I get bored super easy and constantly need a project, but it looks like this 'nesting' thing is starting to kick in.

My blessed mother-in-law Jan purchased this sweet wooden baby chair from Lonesome Whistler (an amazing second hand land in Yarraville) and I've given it a little sand and paint to spruce it up. Here's the before and after.

A pregnant pause above a deep hole and check out what Rhonda donated!

So I may have freaked out Todd and Gio... just slightly.

The other day during lunch break I mentioned to the boys that they may have to drive me to hospital if the baby decides to come early. I didn't mention (but I'm sure they will read this) that they will have to hold my hand while I'm screaming until Reg gets there, and if the bub decides to be born on the side of the road, then they will have to deliver it.

Digging holes, the $20 date challenge & this week's garage sale

Todd - "Sorry Ali, there's not much exciting stuff happening this week as we've gotta dig some holes and level the house".

NOT MUCH EXCITING STUFF?! Hell, I must have a very low excitment rating or Todd and the boys just find digging holes pretty boring.
