Poos and wees

We’ve been thinking about toilet training. Our son isn’t ready, I don’t think, but perhaps over summer he will be? We have bought a potty and like everything plastic introduced into our house, this one has caused a whole lot of excitement.

Alfie has been pouring cups of water into the potty and both he and the dog drink out of it. The potty gets dragged across the floor and shown to anyone who comes over for a visit. No one else is allowed to sit on the potty. No one is allowed to touch it either. God forbid.

The potty has caused so much excitement that my son keeps taking my hand and showing it to me in the bathroom. He has no idea what to do with it, but he likes looking at it and showing me how to take the lid off it and drink out of it. Sigh.

We’ve been using the words ‘poos and wees’ in our house for a while now. Ever since we discovered that Alfie liked to poo behind the curtain. When we see him heading in that direction we ask him if he is going to do poos, usually his raised brow, red fierce face, hunched back and clenched hands leaning on the wall say it all.

When my husband or I go to the toilet it’s a huge ceremony. Alfie always wants to watch and wave bye-bye to the poo. It’s always so exciting to press the flush button and to see how the toilet paper goes around on the holder.

Some mornings after a poo ceremony, it’s really hard to move on from this farewell display to go to the office and take on serious meetings about serious stuff. Sometimes during serious discussions at work I might get a call from my husband who will explain to me the ins and outs of a new poo dance that Alfie has devised or a story about the fascination with the toilet. It can be very hard to switch back to writing documents and speaking with managers.

Prior to the last few months, I had never been to the toilet in front of my husband. It was the one thing I held onto. My one last piece of dignity. Since the fascination with all things bathroom has kicked in, I’m now showering while my dog, son and husband clean teeth, do wees, play with the potty, fix the toilet roll holder, close and open and close the toilet lid, pull the towel off the rail, look in the toilet, throw things in the bath, talk about poos… the list goes on. I can’t even do that secret wee in the shower that no one ever admits to.

So now that I go to the toilet with an audience, what dignity remains? I have no idea about this toilet training thing apart from the many discussions I have had with my husband about putting down the lid. I still continue to lie to my husband that I have diarrhoea and I shut the door of the bathroom and secretly play Tetris on my phone. My husband recently said that I should go and see a doctor as I had been sick in the tummy for some time. I think my private time is almost up.

I would love to know where you go from here. Once your kid grows up, can you revive any sense of mystery about yourself? Will there ever be a time where no one knows that you’ve done a poo?

Until that time arrives, I’m making the most of my toilet time at work.

We watch a house become a home

I totally missed The Bold and the Beautiful on Friday due to the 'poonami' (thanks Tina for this phrase - it totally sums up what happened) event of 2013, so I missed my opportunity to upload some pics. Just for you, here they are as promised:

Super quick deliveries

Well hello. It's been ages - almost a month - and boy has a lot happened!

Firstly, I need to explain why I have been so absent... we kinda had a baby. Nice and early. And he's perfect.

Home stretch and stretchy pants

Today I walked in the front door of our little house and realised that we are totally on the home stretch. Our house is looking freaking tremendous.

It's been a super busy week for me running around picking up lights, glass, breast pads (I had no idea what these were until this week) and lighting cables, that I had to take some time out today to get my chill factor on and rest. It's also been a big week for me as yesterday I realised that at 35 weeks pregnant I can no longer wear high heels. Heart broken.

So here are the treats that have taken place since the crapolo birthday on Tuesday that has been officially moved to Easter:

Our toilet arrived. I knew Dougie would come in with the goods. It's not the toilet we originally purchased (Reece made a boo boo) but it's a toilet all the same and it arrived in my birthday week. Therefore, I received a toilet for my birthday and I AM SO HAPPY. Not sure when it's being installed yet.

Here's our little toilet, all boxed up ready for a good sitting.

MASSIVE DAY - a kitchen for our little house

What an excellent day. A really excellent day.

Last night we came home to find our beautiful floorboards had been layed. Don't they look amazing and they're solid as a rock! I can't believe these babies were put in over three days, I thought it would take at least a week or more.

A stable floor for pregnant peanuts and big bubbas

Far out, things happen pretty quickly around here. Perhaps it's this pregnant haze that seems to consume most of my day that makes me forget about what's going on around me. I mean, just yesterday I spent 45 minutes in the local IGA. I was there to pick up some grub for tea, but I walked out after all that time with just a packet of unsalted peanuts and ate them on the way home. It wasn't until I got home that I realised I didn't have anything for dinner. Vague is but a mere statement.

Locked up and loaded - I put on my work boots

Yahoo - we have walls and aren't they a pretty sight making our pad nice and cosy. All I want to do now is slip on a Jim Croce record and settle in for a cup of Earl Grey.

RIP Mister Croce

Getting plastered with tradies

Wahoo, the plaster will go up tomorrow! This means our walls are nearly complete.

Gio and Todd have commenced putting up the weatherboards - just in time before the storm hit us last night - and today the boys ripped up our hallway floor. We can officially walk from the front to the back of our house without balancing on beams, holding onto joists, standing on a nail, getting a splinter, tripping over some edge of something etc. However, I'm still not allowed to do this without wearing shoes... boring.

Fishy feasts, flooring and freakin' hot weather

Our roof is going up tomorrow. ROOF!
The majority of our pad has an original tile roof, but the new addition at the back will have a hot new tin roof minus the cat.

This is huge for me. As a fan of Lego construction and serious dollhouse set up, I understand that it's super important to get the structure right and then BAM! you can start to make things pretty within.

School for babies

Two things:
1. Why don't they put a DVD of childbirth education classes in with a packet of condoms, then you are fully prepared for what is to come?
2. How rad is our feature tile?

Lead lights and awesome sights

Week 5 is off to a kick-butt start!

This week is all about framing, which sounds a little boring but I love it as you can start to see how big our living spaces will be.

Welcome Johnny Kettle

Tapping into the timber and tile market

Nothing beats a Saturday morning than a stop by the local recycled timber yard.

We were shopping around for some cool looking timber to be used as our island bench top. Dougie suggested that timber on the island top and polished concrete for the main kitchen bench top would look rad. We agreed.

We headed down to see our pal Andy at Urban Salvage in Spotswood. This place is awesome and it seems every time we go there they have a new shipment of some kind of recycled timber that has come from an obscure place.

Toilet humour: we see a rear appear

Gio turned 28 today and to celebrate we had cupcakes.

Following a hospital visit (don't worry mum, it was just a standard pre-natal appointment), I picked up these sweet treats from the Cupcakery in Yarraville Village. I tried to pick out the most masculine of the bunch, and I think I did ok. They were excellent. The boys agreed when we shared them over smoko.

Nesting needs and week 3 in review

Perhaps it's because I've just hit the 3rd trimester and I'm on the home straight or maybe it's because I get bored super easy and constantly need a project, but it looks like this 'nesting' thing is starting to kick in.

My blessed mother-in-law Jan purchased this sweet wooden baby chair from Lonesome Whistler (an amazing second hand land in Yarraville) and I've given it a little sand and paint to spruce it up. Here's the before and after.

Terror-rariums - a bathroom delight

So we are thinking about recreating a scene from the 1959* cinematic version of Journey to the Centre of the Earth as a terrarium in an alcove above our bath in our planned bathroom.
